El sentido del arte de Glenda León (La Habana, 1976) surgió de un trasfondo multidisciplinario y exploraciones espirituales. Su temprano interés por la danza y la coreografía profundizó su comprensión de un “todo” que combina mente, cuerpo, espacio, sonido y silencio. La Historia del Arte le proporcionó un campo de investigación y ensanchó sus referencias. Su maestría en Nuevos Medios en la Academia de Artes de los Medios de Colonia (KHM) expandió su repertorio de técnicas y materiales hacia la experimentación. Su obra desafía incesantemente nuestras percepciones del mundo, en ocasiones haciendo visibles las leyes de la naturaleza y en otras enfatizando el acto de escuchar como un paso necesario para continuar evolucionando.
La artista, que vive y trabaja en La Habana y Madrid, ha expuesto individualmente en espacios como el Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Vigo (2021; España), el Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (2020; España) y el Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (2015; España). Asimismo, ha sido invitada a la Trienal de Aichi (2022; Japón), la 15 Bienal de Cuenca (2021; Ecuador), la Trienal de la Imagen de Guangzhou (2021; China), la Bienal de Escultura de Changwon (2020; Corea del Sur), la Bienal de Dakar (2018; Senegal), la Bienal SITE Santa Fe (2014; Estados Unidos), la 55a Bienal de Venecia (2013; Italia) y la Bienal de La Habana (2019, 2015, 2009, 2003; Cuba). Entre sus reconocimientos figuran el Premio Bienal Pilar Juncosa y Sotheby’s de Creación Artística (2021), el Premio DKV (2020) y el Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2020, 2005). Su obra pertenece a importantes colecciones públicas del mundo que incluyen el Centre Georges Pompidou, París; Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Miami; Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), Toronto; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; y el Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Glenda León (Havana, 1976)’s sense of art has grown out of a multidisciplinary background and spiritual explorations. Her early interest in dance and choreography deepened her comprehension of a “whole”, combining mind, body, space, sound, and silence. Art History gave her a domain for investigation and widened her sources of influences. Her master’s degree in New Media at The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) broadened her spectrum of media and materials and evidenced her openness to experimentation. Her work incessantly defies our perception of the world, at times by making visible some of the laws of Nature and at others by emphasizing the act of listening as a necessary step to continue evolving.
The artist, who lives and works in Havana and Madrid, has exhibited individually in spaces such as the Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Vigo (2021; Spain), the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (2020; Spain) and the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (2015; Spain). Likewise, she has been invited to the Aichi Triennale (2022; Japan), the 15th Cuenca Biennial (2021; Ecuador), the Guangzhou Image Triennial (2021; China), the Changwon Sculpture Biennale (2020; South Korea), the Dakar Biennale (2018; Senegal), the SITE Santa Fe Biennial (2014; USA), the 55th Venice Biennale (2013; Italy) and the Havana Biennial (2019, 2015, 2009, 2003; Cuba).
